Principal’s Reflection
Good Dads Matter. If I needed any reminding of this, I got that from attending the funeral of a good friend of mine last Friday. I employed Pete as a young man fresh out of College in 1992 at St Brendan’s. This turned out to be one of my best staff selections ever. Pete has been on staff there ever since filling a number of roles.
He had a powerful and positive impact on countless young men who attended St Brendan’s. He was husband to Cara and father to Emily and Caleb. Pete survived his battle with Cancer long enough to see Caleb graduate last year. At his requiem, both Emily and Caleb spoke about their dad and who he was to them. It was a powerful and heartbreaking tribute. Peter was a prodigiously talented athlete. He played Rugby for Queensland and could turn his hand to any sport. Lots of dads expect their kids to love the things they love. Peter’s kids and I guess, in particular, his son Caleb, showed very little interest in sport. Both Emily and Caleb are entertainers. They are gifted at performing arts. It was so powerful to listen to those two talk about a dad who never missed a recital, or practice or performance and who was just so proud and supportive of who they were as people. Maybe more amazing was that Peter, in his youth, had no great male role model. His dad left his mum when he and his two brothers were very young. He was raised by a single Mum who just must have been heroic. Peter was so proud of his Aboriginal heritage as well and encouraged the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys at St Brendan’s to do so as well. This was powerfully communicated by those young men who added to his funeral liturgy through traditional ritual and song. Good dads matter. And we need so many more of them. We lost a really good one in Peter Bartlett but I hope his example will inspire so many others to be better partners and better dads.
Important Calendar Dates coming up include our Interhouse Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 16 Feb. This involves half a day at the pool for all students. Parents, please remember that this is a part of life at Shalom and not optional. I really hope that the spike we saw in illnesses on that day last year does not occur again. The day before, Monday 15 Feb, is our Bishop’s In-Service Day which will be a student free day for the College.
School TV is a service provided for parents and the link is on our home web page. It contains so many very professionally presented pieces of information on all sorts of information – bullying, study, resilience and so many more. Among the most recent is information for parents whose children are starting high school. Please check it out.
Shalom Past Student Alan Fox (2001 Senior) has played a part in securing a $300m contract to produce home Covid tests. Alan works with bio-tech firm Ellume which is doing cutting edge work in this area.

Curriculum
Welcome back!
We hope 2021 will be smoother sailing for both students and teachers alike. This year sees two new General subjects and one new vocational qualification being offered in the Senior School curriculum – Psychology, Engineering and Certificate Ill in Health Services Assistance. We are thrilled to be able to extend our curriculum offerings to meet the needs of our school community.
Key staff supporting students through the year will be Mrs O’Donnell (Pathways Coordinator), Mrs Ivers (Senior School Coordinator), Mrs Munckton (Middle School Coordinator), Mrs Staley (Learning Enhancement Coordinator) and Mr Robinson, Student Welfare Coordinator, supporting students who have high-level study or sport commitments outside Shalom.
Assessment Calendar
At this stage, Learning Area Coordinators are populating assessment tasks to the Assessment Calendar for Semester One. The Assessment Calendar (referred to as “Curricular Activities” in our learning management system) will be available via the Parent Lounge. To access the Parent Lounge, you will need to know your Parent Lounge login details, which were emailed out by the IT department. Please contact the College if you are unable to locate these details. Once logged-in, click on Student Details and then Curricular Activities. You may select a child using the top right drop-down, if you have more than one child at Shalom. Please ensure you select 2021 as the year.
The completed Calendar will include information about all assessment tasks for students including: Activity Name; Group (subject area); Start Date; Draft Date (only appears for electronic submissions – see task sheets for more details); Due Date; and Activity Status. The class teacher will update these entries as required. Please contact the appropriate class teacher, or Learning Area Coordinator, for more information about assessment tasks if required.
Please note that the Curricular Activities within a student’s allocation of subjects may not be spread evenly through the semester. Across the College, many assessment tasks are assigned during Semester One and each of these is timed according to subject requirements. This makes intervention to spread assessments impractical. However, teachers will suggest timelines to help students manage their time when a task is set. Students (with your support) are encouraged to use this information, in conjunction with the Forward Planner 2021 (pages 128 – 131) in the Student Record Book, to help spread their workload and to meet deadlines. It is not unusual for assessment loads to be heavy around peak times such as the weeks leading up to the end of term. Our students must develop the capacity to manage their time and we all have a part to play in this.
Homework/Study Plan
The Homework/Study Plan (pages 126 - 127) in the Student Record Book is a tool recommended for use by all students to assist in developing time management and assessment management skills. Please contact your child’s pastoral care teacher or class teacher if you would like assistance in helping your child to develop time management and assessment management skills.
Please note that the Student Record Book details the Academic Policies and Procedures of the College (pages 20-25). It is strongly recommended that parents and students familiarise themselves with these procedures to ensure they are meeting their obligations regarding to assessment.
2020 Results
2020 saw 95% of our Year 12 students receive a QCE or a QCIA. QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre) data made available to the College showed that 84.2% of our students who applied for University entry received their first or second preference. ATAR distributions for those students who shared their data were:

It was wonderful to see that 166 VET qualifications were awarded to our students across Year 10 -12, 1 school-based apprenticeship and 3 school-based traineeships were achieved. This data continues to highlight the wonderful learning opportunities and pathways that are available to all students at Shalom.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FOCUS by: Mark Fox
Principal: St Patrick's Catholic Primary School
"Did you know that more people resign from their jobs and file for divorce during January, than during any other month of the year.
It seems that most people push through the challenges of their busy year then rush straight into the craziness of the Christmas New Year period. In that space between New Year and returning to work however, most of us find some time to decompress and reflect.
When we create that space, we consider bigger things like our core values, our beliefs, how we see ourselves, how we spend our time and our relationships.
If we determine there is a misalignment between our core beliefs and how we are living, we experience something called cognitive dissonance. It is that uncomfortable feeling of knowing that we are not living our best lives or being our true selves. If we are not living according to our values, we find little meaning, purpose or happiness in our lives.
One of the many things I love about Catholic Education, is the opportunity it affords to develop values and beliefs and to encourage our students to lead meaningful lives. By way of example, three mornings each week, we gather our whole school, 500 children from Prep to Year 6, for student led prayer. The class share a Gospel story of how Jesus challenged us to live. They offer ways in which we could act as Jesus did in our own daily interactions and we pray for others in our homes, parish and community. We conclude with a song which reinforces the theme of the prayer.
In this way, each member of our community is reminded constantly of their relationship with Jesus, and how to live and act towards others in a way that brings meaning, purpose and happiness to our own lives and to the lives of others.
"Enjoy reading this year's edition of the 'Good News Magazine: 2020 New Vision', a look at the year that was and how we adapted to a new way of doing thins."
